0013 85/11/22 00:30:08 * A LUNCH WITH JOHN ROTH * ---- -------- -------- ------------------------------------------------- John Roth has made Design Quality BNR's number one priority. Big John said in Quality Workshop November 18 "Schedules must be set consistent with a Quality output. If this is too late then functionality must be removed, not Quality. BNR Management must take a stand on this point. Those that don't, won't be managers for long!" The CM4NEWS Publisher is wondering who would be the first casualty in the CMOS4 management..... Steve Sunter's brainchild BNR/NT CMOS TECHNOLOGY plot caught Cesar Cesaratto's attention November 19. Cesar told Steve and Go "You finally produced Real Data in CMOS4!" Mr. Justice Eric Livermore is arranging a photo session to produce a slide of the plot, while Dave Smith placed an order of the plot November 21. The CM4NEWS Publisher bets it won't be too long before Cesar presents the plot to the ultimate VP Council. The CM4NEWS Publisher attended the fourth Canadian Club of Ottawa luncheon meeting November 21 at Chateau Laurier with guest speaker Bob White, President of the United Auto Workers (Canada). While genuine Bob White expressed a very strong opposition to the bilateral free trade with the United States in his speech, the CM4NEWS Publisher shook hands with John Roth who happened to be sitting at the same table, gave his humble business card to John, and engaged in an intimate 40-minute conversation with him with topics ranging from ISDN to a hiring freeze at BNR. The CM4NEWS Publisher was impressed by John Roth's calibre as President of BNR, and he praised John's tough attitude toward the BNR management on Quality in his recent directive. Although the Publisher didn't mention his CM4NEWS at all, he did entertain John by bringing up Cesar's comment on the BNR/NT CMOS TECHNOLOGY plot. Big John was impressed to hear from the Publisher that the first CMOS4 test chip is expected to be back from Motorola December 11. (If Y13 doesn't come back by then, the Publisher will kill Jeff Bennett who put the information on the BYLINE file.) John Roth stressed that the BNR operating budget for 1986 is very tight, while the Publisher presented his personal opinion on our World-Class Silicon Design System (bugs, bugs, bugs). Big John said he is looking into Sierra (IBM 3090) for Division 5. John revealed that he designed antennas for the ground stations for ANIK satellite at RCA a long time ago, and the conversation moved on to Walter Light's view on Canadian university education and then to Alvin Toffler's "The Third Wave" which the Publisher watched on TVOntario the night before.
