I was quite encouraged to receive a referral from COIN/REPIC.
HyperInfo Canada Inc. is a start-up company to capitalise on the Information Age. In order to achieve the eventual goal of accomplishing automatic interpretation of documents such as the Statutes of Canada, we must pursue very long-term (10 years) Research and Development. Thus, the activity is focused on Artificial Intelligence to Hypermedia/Hypertext link as well as lifestyle research.
As a first step, we are bidding on a 4-year project starting 1991 by DARPA (U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) entitled "text retrieval and understanding", research on algorithm for multilingual text retrieval and understanding, seeking innovative approaches that lead to or enable revolutionary advances in the state of the art. It is intended to detect documents dealing with particular topics and then automatically extract specific data from them. The main applications will be for automatic routing of incoming documents and subsequent retrieval, and then automatic database filing.
In the mean time, we consider getting into an information-providing business through Bell Canada's ALEX videotex system. We could offer an advantage over others by building up "integrated knowledge database". An example is an on-line TV guide coupled with individual profile, spearheading the concept of "narrowcast". This would ultimately lead to the Government Services Information System and an intelligent and idiot-proof ordering system when the optical fibre reaches every home with a tremendous data transmission capacity.
Enclosed is a description of our Research and Development activities as submitted to Revenue Canada for Scientific Research and Experimental Development Incentive Program (approved). I look forward to receiving your feedback.
