The Lead Contractor for this project is a federally incorporated for-profit corporation (Business Number 896068467) specialising since 1989 in Research and Development of Knowledge Service Applications in Cyberspace and on the Information Superhighway. The award-winning World-Wide Web site HyperInfo Knowledge Power Centre pioneers on-line knowledge publishing with pay-for-value electronic commerce on the Internet.
HyperInfo Canada Inc. will develop the system by integrating the inference engine and knowledge rule base with World-Wide Web on the Internet. The company presently has 1 permanent full-time employee, and its annual income is about $20 000 CAD. The work will be performed in Hull (Québec) CANADA.
The federally incorporated for-profit corporation is headquartered in Ottawa (Ontario) CANADA. The company specialises in dissemination of coaching knowledge and service through extensive on-line and print publications. Potentium: The Coaching Network™ has organized conferences, seminars and workshops in Canada, the United States and abroad, and has a mission to improve the coaching process in sport and other domains.
Potentium Inc. will analyse competing services, and prepare a marketing and commercialisation plan for these services. The company presently has 2 permanent employees, and its annual sales are about $60 000 CAD.
University of Ottawa
Located in Ottawa (Ontario) CANADA, the School of Human Kinetics is internationally recognised for research on sport psychology. Its research has spanned the fields of talent identification in sport as well as the development of human expertise both for performers, as well as coaches.
The School of Human Kinetics will provide the project with the coaching knowledge base that its research scholars have accumulated over the years through SSHRC funded research, as well as contribute to the development of the knowledge rule base.
03 | Description of the Proposed Project
Products or Applications to be Developed
An expert system called IntelliFAQ RoboCoach will be developed, and be made accessible via World-Wide Web (WWW) on the Internet. The system employs an intelligent system to find personalised coaching solutions after a dialog with the user, rather than utilising "search engines".
The system finds relevant coaching information from the knowledge rule base, and presents a brief description of the prescribed solution to the question. The user then enters a VirtualPIN (SM), if he/she wishes, to obtain an on-line full-text solution immediately at nominal cost via First Virtual™ Internet Payment System.
Development Work to be Undertaken
A system integrating an inference engine and a knowledge rule base with WWW and transaction-based electronic commerce will be designed and implemented. Specifically, the user interface will be a Java applet on the client web browser situated on a given platform. The HTTP web server will send the appropriate knowledge rule base to the Java applet.
The main focus of the development will be the integration of the software, some of which are commercially available, while others must be coded. The existing accumulated coaching knowledge in free-format will be captured and coded in the rule base in a structured manner. Standard knowledge representation methods will be used.
Innovative Aspects of Deliverables
Expert systems have gradually but steadily found a way into various fields such as process control and help desk applications. However, the concept of providing direct access to a knowledge rule base via WWW on the Internet so that the user can have a dialog with the system, is novel.
The use of Java applet as a platform-independent inference engine to be run on the web client site is quite innovative. It cuts down the server load significantly compared with running an inference engine on the web server site, making more efficient use of the network resources.
Degree of Technological, Financial or Market Risk
Technical risk is high, mainly because of the use of new and unproven Java technology, especially when applied to inference engines and knowledge rule bases. The Java inference engine has not previously been put to commercial use.
Financial or market risk is also high, given the reluctance of consumers to carry out electronic commerce on the Internet for reasons of security and privacy.
Thus, the project could not proceed without CANARIE funding.
Specific Area of Focus
The IntelliFAQ RoboCoach project focuses on Education and Life-long Learning. Specifically, it explores new models of tele-learning and tele-training through innovative Internet-based interactive knowledge delivery methods. Given the importance of motor skill learning and teaching in everyday life, both with children and adults, the provision of individually crafted solutions via WWW on the Internet from the expert coaching knowledge rule base, is both exciting and important.

04 | Contribution to CANARIE's Objectives
HyperInfo Knowledge Power Centre <http://WWW.HyperInfo.CA/> has effectively demonstrated on-line publishing on the WWW with Pay-Per-Access and Pay-Per-Read concept, as evidenced by the 1996 Canadian Internet Special Achievement Award for "Best Internet Publication (electronic)". However, current on-line publishing is limited to the presentation of static knowledge content, rather than customised rule-based solutions.
Today, so-called "Frequently-Asked Questions" (FAQ) are recognised as an important source of valuable knowledge on particular subjects. However, they exist either as flat files or hypertext links with low levels of structural organisation, and no 2-way interaction.
The IntelliFAQ RoboCoach project will deliver dynamic knowledge from the WWW site linked to high-quality knowledge bases. Thus, Canada's communications and information infrastructure will benefit from high signal-to-noise ratio when a small amount of high-quality knowledge is transmitted and received as opposed to a large amount of irrelevant data. The present philosophy to represent this situation is "Reduce/Reuse/Recycle information unless there is new piece of knowledge".
The IntelliFAQ RoboCoach project will facilitate the development of next-generation advanced knowledge services for future Education marketplace reforms in Canada. The development of such a networking application will contribute to the Canadian economy through innovative service concepts and unique, broad social benefits. This commercialised service can ideally be operated by small-sized enterprises.
05 | Target Market Description
There is an untapped market for coaching, especially in sport, but as well as other forms of adult education. Automated self-serve of coaching knowledge with the IntelliFAQ RoboCoach service would contribute to the dissemination of specialised coaching knowledge. There is concrete evidence of the need, just by looking at the referer page of from 200 to 400 daily hits to the Potentium: The Coaching Network™ web site. Most visitors made contact through various search engines looking for "sport psychology".
The target audience of IntelliFAQ RoboCoach service is global, meaning value-added knowledge exports from Canada. Preliminary abstracts will be provided for free, while there will be a charge of $3 to $8 (plus GST for Canadian residents) for high-quality detailed knowledge packet documents such as on-line book chapters with text (HTML) and graphics (GIF), customised OMSAT mental skill assessment profiles for sport and other achievement domains, and possibly QuickTime video (MOV).
The major competing service for coaching and sport psychology is Human Kinetics Publishers, Inc. of Illinois, U.S.A. They publish a variety of books in the field of human kinetics or kinesiology, with as many as 90 books a year. The unique strategy of the IntelliFAQ RoboCoach service is not to compete with them in quantity, but with the provision of high-quality, focused knowledge. Thus, the IntelliFAQ RoboCoach service would enhance the growth and competitiveness of the Lead Contractor, which is a Canadian-Controlled Private Corporation.
An intelligent system via WWW on the Internet can provide a specialised and highly transportable form of self-education. The IntelliFAQ RoboCoach service would serve as a personalised coaching resource to complement the knowledge and strategies of human coaches. In addition, both amateur and professional coaches can benefit from the system themselves for continuing education.
The generic coaching techniques can be applied to other fields apart from the sport context, such as corporate training, internal business education, workfare, and for parental guidance. Customised solutions for these various client groups will be generated by the collective wisdom of Canada's Olympic and professional coaches.
The economic model for the IntelliFAQ RoboCoach service, once the system is fully commercialised, is outlined below.
