2001-11-01|WestJet Announces A Bewitching Offer: Free Flights on Halloween!
To whom it may concern
The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, specifically Section 15 - Equality Rights, states "Every individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to the equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination".
WestJet Airlines, a federally regulated airline company, issued a press release <http://www2.cdn-news.com/scripts/ccn-release.pl?/2001/10/29/1029006n.html?cp=wja> 2001-10-29 entitled "WestJet Announces A Bewitching Offer: Free Flights on Halloween!". WestJet offered free travel on Halloween Day 2001 for all guests with the last names of "Black," "Orange" or "Jack(s)", and for those who were born on October 31.
An article in the Ottawa Citizen 2001-10-31 quotes a spokesperson for WestJet: "We thought it was a fun thing to do to show off our youth and spirit." However, this particular promotion demonstrates a spirit of discrimination on the basis of citizen's name and the date of birth.
Please take an appropriate action so that this kind of discriminatory promotion will not be repeated by federally regulated companies.
