I attended your enlightening seminar on Fuel Cells 2001-11-07. I was very pleased to hear your positive view in the long-term prospect of ammonia as fuel because I was exploring ammonia myself.
Ammonia fuel cells have been around since the 1960s in military research on vehicle propulsion, and the merit of ammonia for fuel cells for automotive applications is documented at a webpage below.
Apollo Energy Fuel Cell Development is working on alkaline fuel cells powered by ammonia fuel. However, I have not heard of any company trying to use ammonia for PEMFC. Is it worthwhile to investigate innovations such as QED (Quantum Electro-Dynamics) Cavitation to lower the ammonia cracking temperature of 800 C which I think is the greatest engineering challenge especially in a cold climate?
If so, I would launch a "Canadian Ammonia Power" project to develop a compact ammonia cracking device as an in-vehicle hydrogen generator to be combined with Ballard's PEMFC as an all-Canadian solution, perhaps with support from CCAF (Climate Change Action Fund) because of the positive impact of non-CH4/non-CO2 solution on global warming.
Thank you very much for your thought-provoking seminar.
