"Crash Survivor" Aircraft Black Box
Operational Capability to be Provided:
  • An aircraft black box comprises a recorder assembly and at least one airbag assembly mounted on the side of the recorder assembly. The recorder assembly comprises a memory unit, and a power unit. The airbag assembly comprises an inflatable airbag, means for inflating the inflatable airbag when an actuation signal is received, and a sensor detecting an impact and transmitting an actuation signal to the means for inflating the inflatable airbag. The inflatable airbag upon impact rapidly inflates around the recorder assembly in order to absorb the energy of the crash and also to provide buoyancy when the black box is submerged in water.
Proposed Technical Approach:
  • Very few data in the aircraft black boxes aboard the airplanes hijacked by the terrorists 2001-09-11 were recovered due to excessive damages by the impact and by subsequent fire.
  • The "Crash Survivor" Aircraft Black Box provides improved survivability to protect critical data in a flight data recorder and a cockpit voice recorder by inflating an inflatable airbag upon impact. It provides enhanced operational capability to both military and civilian aircraft.
  • Canadian patent application "Aircraft Black Box having Airbag" (2 292 878) has been filed.
  • Research pyro dynamics for flame resistance material, etc.
  • Develop airbags of different shapes for better physical protection.
  • Design a 3-dimensional virtual prototype.
  • Fabricate prototype units.
Rough Order of Magnitude Cost and Schedule:
  • Design phase period: 4 months
  • Prototype phase period: 8 months
  • Total period of performance: 12 months
  • Design phase cost: $100 000 USD
  • Prototype phase cost $300 000 USD
  • Total cost: $400 000 USD
Deliverables:
  • 2 prototype units of "Crash Survivor" Aircraft Black Box
