During the Winterlude/Bal de neige, I found an ornament depicting a snowflake on the wall of a federal government building at the corner of Wellington Street and Bank Street in Ottawa (Ontario), not far from the NCC headquarters. The snowflake has 5 points.
Real snowflakes are 6-sided hexagonal crystals due to the structure of the water (H2O) molecule. Actually, H2O molecules occasionally form ice crystals with three or 12 sides, but never 5 or 7 or 8 or 9.
If the ornament is indeed an attempt to depict a real snowflake, the prominent display of an incorrect shape at such a prominent tourist spot may be interpreted as Canada's ignorance in science education.
