2005-10-03|Sunatori's Fruit Flies from Ground Coffee
Potential Discovery or Invention
I heeded advice that used ground coffee beans may add nutrients to house plants. Every time I add used ground coffee to the plant soil, I notice proliferation of fruit flies around the house plants. Upon close inspection of the ground coffee, there are not only fruit flies but also tiny jumping bugs.
Since many organisms were proven to have survived intense heat and pressure of the break-up of Space Shuttle "Columbia" in 2003, these flies and jumping bugs may be able to survive high-temperature processing and coffee-brewing. I have no idea what type of health risks the fruit fly eggs pose, but they may contain harmful bacteria and/or virus.
Although these bugs may have originated elsewhere in the house and gathered on the ground coffee on the plant soil to reproduce, I believe that it is worth investigating if commercially available ground coffee may contain eggs from the place of origin. For your information, my brand is "Maxwell House".
Fruit fly infestation came in 6 waves before the war was over. To control such infestation, isopropyl alcohol ((CH3)2CHOH) seems to be most effective compared to sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and ammonia (NH3).
Sadly, 1 of the 2 avocado trees in the pot suffered too much chemical damage from isopropyl alcohol ((CH3)2CHOH), and died as a casualty of war. It will be preserved as a memorial for the war against fruit flies.
The 3pcs LED Mosquito Killer Electric Fly Pest Zapper UV Light Insect Controller Blue & White/US Plug turned out to be quite effective in zapping fruit flies.
