Portable Personal Cooling Unit: Archimedes Spiral Screw
Proposed Technical Approach:
The proposal is to use the Archimedes Spiral Screw as a fluid mover for the Portable Personal Cooling Unit.
Cooling fans remain to be a very effective technology to provide sustained and effective heat removal. However, noise and vibration from a conventional cooling fan causes mental stress in people and animals. A low noise wearable powered (cordless), portable personal cooling fan with a rechargeable battery will be developed in order to prevent heat stress in people and animals.
Most noise from conventional electric air blower systems (3-blade, 4-blade, 6 blade, etc.) originates from the blade cutting the air at the interface. The use of Archimedes Spiral Screw will significantly reduce the generation of noise due to the single-edge construction. Undesirable vibration, which results from asymmetrical weight distribution of conventional electric air blower systems, will also be reduced, if not eliminated.
The helical vane will minimise the turbulent flow, and keep the flow as laminar as possible. In effect, the electric air blower system with the helical vane creates a cyclone vortex. Thanks to the smooth operation, the lifetime of the components will be extended.
The Magnetically Erected Wind-Effect Display Device (Canadian Patent 2 327 490) has demonstrated the effectiveness of the helical vane in moving air.
The drive mechanism (an electric motor, etc.) will be housed co-axially with the helical vane, inside a novel double-cylindrical case. This unique configuration results in ultra-compact design that fits into a required package.
Except for the custom-made helical vane and the housing structure, proven technology with off-the-shelf components will be used throughout the development.
An off-the-shelf electric motor will be selected that meets the ambient temperature requirement and the longevity/durability requirement.

Proposal Team Experience
Simon Sunatori, P.Eng./ing., M.Eng., is a Canadian engineer, inventor and entrepreneur. He obtained a Master of Engineering (Engineering Physics) degree from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in 1983, and is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a Member of the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO), a Life Member of the World Future Society (WFS), a Lifetime Fellow of the North American Academy of Arts and Sciences (NAAAS), among others.
HyperInfo Canada has conducted Research and Development projects, especially in the field of Electromagnetic Technology.
