2007-04-02|Revitalising Canadian Hockey with 3-Way Hockey Rink
To all Canadians
Over the years, the great Canadian sport of hockey has lost the original spirit and excitement of offence/defence, scoring points.
We think that the solution to revolutionalise hockey is to make the game 3-way. Such Canadian ingenuity will revitalise the great Canadian sport. The 3-way hockey is an exciting new form of hockey which would espouse great Canadian spirit.
The recent election in the province of Québec has created a 3-way situation (PLQ, ADQ, PQ), as in the province of Ontario (Liberals, Progressive Conservatives, NDP). Until the anomaly of Reform Party and the Bloc Québecois, the Federal politics used to be 3-way (Liberals, Progressive Conservatives, NDP), too. This contrasts with the entrenched 2-way situation (Democrats and Republicans) in the U.S.A. So, 3-way competition is a natural fit for Canada.
There is already Canadian Patent Application "3-Way Hockey Rink" (2 422 645). The concept of 3-way sport is a paradigm shift, which may be difficult for some people to take, but it promises to be a new and exciting sport.
Clear identification of 3 teams is essential, but it is easy to achieve with 3 distinct colour uniforms (e.g., RED, GREEN, BLUE). 3-way games are suitable in team sports with random factor, i.e., the puck/ball having an unanticipated trajectory. Other sports potentially suited for going 3-way include soccer, water polo, etc.
Our proposal is to establish 3HL (Canadian 3-way Hockey League). An Ottawa Citizen columnist recently write "How the NHL took the fun out of hockey (2007-04-08)". Well, we believe that the 3HL will put greater fun back into hockey. The games will be more exciting as neutral-zone trap would be irrelevant thanks to 3-way games because of the defensive alignment.
Although building a 3-way rink is capital-intensive, there are many advantages. Figure skating on a rounder rink would be more exciting. 3-way rink's rounder arenas are structurally stronger. Concerts would be accommodated more easily. Already, international rinks elsewhere in the world have a different size from NHL rinks do.
