Technical Approach
Title of Proposal:
Compact, Low Cost Water Jet Pump with a High Delivery Pressure: Magnetically-Driven Archimedes Spiral Screw
Proposed Technical Approach:
The proposal is to use the Magnetically-Driven Archimedes Spiral Screw as a fluid mover.
So-called magnetic drive seal-less centrifugal pump is an established technology in heavy industrial applications for use with acids, alkalis, caustics, bleaches, sea water, solvents, etc. There is no metal contact with the liquid being pumped. Since the pump is magnetically driven, no shaft seal is required. Power is transmitted by a magnetic field from the magnet attached to the motor through the solid body of the pump to the magnet attached to the impeller. With no shaft seals, there are no seal or liquid leaks.
The impeller used in the conventional centrifugal pump causes turbulent flow with high level of noise and vibration, and may create cavitation which leads to short life and high wear of the pump mechanism.
The project will greatly simplify and miniaturise the magnetic drive seal-less pump for use in household appliances, with an Archimedes Spiral Screw as a rotor. This combination will significantly extend the operating life of pumps by reducing pump wear, and realise a maintenance-free pump system with a long period of continuous or intermittent operation. There will be no bearing, no valve, no shaft seal.
The helical vane is the only moving part. It will minimise the turbulent flow, and keep the flow as laminar as possible. Thanks to the smooth operation, the lifetime of the components will be extended. A rare-earth magnet is embedded in plastic inside the helical vane on the rotor, which will be enclosed in a fused or welded injection-moulded plastic casing for ultra-high reliability.
The unique edge-activated shaft-less configuration results in ultra-compact design that fits into a required package. The motor itself is brush-less alternating-polarity electromagnet with no moving parts on the stator side.
The solver has filed a patent application entitled "Magnetically Driven Archimedes Spiral Screw Pump". The patent claim includes a unique passive (inexpensive) magnetic bearing technology to eliminate the vertical wobble.
Please refer to the diagram for the shape of the proposed pump system. The dimensions of the proposed pump system will be within the specification (diameter 100 mm, length 200 mm). Rated delivery pressure, rated flow rate, rated output power, and durability will be known after the prototype construction.
Estimated unit price for an annual output of 500 000 units is expected to be less than $50 USD because of the extreme simplicity of the proposed pump system's design and construction.
