Technical Approach
Title of Proposal:
Energy Saving Technologies: Disc-Shaped Light-Emitting Diode Illumination Device
Proposed Technical Approach:
The proposal is to develop a Disc-Shaped Light-Emitting Diode Illumination Device as an integrated lamp/light fixture product.
There are many instances where it would be desirable to illuminate a room with a high-efficiency low-maintenance illumination device, and to provide a direct drop-in replacement of conventional low-efficiency high-maintenance light fixtures.
The LED (Light-Emitting Diode) is more energy efficient and has longer life-time than the CFL (Compact Fluorescent Lamp). The life-time of the LED lamp approaches/exceeds the life-time of a conventional light fixture.
Although the cost of high-efficiency LED lamps has been dropping, it is still much higher than the cost of CFL lamps. Thus, there is an opportunity to combine the long-life LED lamp with a light fixture to create a cost-effective integrated illumination device.
The customer will purchase a single illumination device instead of a lamp and a light fixture. The novel illumination device will screw into an Edison-type socket which costs less than $1.00 USD. Thus, the cost of the integrated illumination device will be less than the cost of a separate lamp plus the cost of a separate light fixture.
