The proposal is to develop a process to use ultrasonic evaporators for compressing wet, powdered sodium chloride in evaporation ponds.
Ultrasonic evaporators will be immersed in the "Dead Sea" ponds in order to improve the extraction, evaporation, and refinement of mined minerals and salts.
Ultrasonic evaporators have been used in household humidifiers for a long time. Ultrasonic transducer elements are made of either a piezoelectric material such as Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) or a magnetostrictive material such as Terfenol-D alloy.
Firstly, the possibility of compartmentalising the ponds is explored, as shown in Figure 1. The efficiency of ultrasonic evaporation will be increased if compartmentalisation is possible.
Secondly, the use of capillary elements will be explored, as shown in Figure 2. Evaporation of water will be accelerated with the capillary action in conjunction with ultrasonic transducers.
Thirdly, a floating-transducer configuration will be explored, as shown in Figure 3.
