Several years ago, I started direct preauthorized payment of the municipal taxes from my Scotiabank powerchequing account. It has worked fine, but I had to change the Scotiabank account from one powerchequing account to another powerchequing account.
So, I made a request to the Ville de Gatineau to accept my new powerchequing account. Please refer to the reply from a city staff, insisting that they need "a void cheque", and it is "the only way".
I do not have a cheque book because I do not need to write a cheque. All of my transactions are electronically done with direct deposit and direct payment.
I have made an account change requests to the following institutions. Absolutely none of them required me to submit "a void cheque", and all of them accepted my account change without any problem whatsoever.
Hydro-Québec
MasterCard Bill Payment
The Personal (Auto insurance, Home insurance)
Société de l'assurance automobile (immatriculation, Permit de conduire)
Scotiabank (mortgage)
Scotiabank (OnLine Internet Banking, TeleScotia)
VISA Account Transfer
Child tax credit (Federal)
Revenue Canada (DD Form)
Therefore, please have the Ville de Gatineau change their policy of requiring "a void cheque".
