The most important factor that STEM education provides is critical thinking skill with logic and scientific/technological/engineering/mathematical backgrounds that are severely lacking in the general public who trust myths and urban legends more than facts. That is why there are so many STEM-educated people who succeed in various non-STEM fields. As long as such aspects are made clear to students, I do not see a "crisis" in terms of overall progress in human civilisation.
