2014-07-28|Call grows for Canada to launch own satellites
To the Editor
There is a significant advantage in launching a satellite from a site as close as possible to the equator because the Earth at the equator is already moving at about 1 670 km/h. Greater angular momentum helps in gaining initial velocity, so less rocket fuel is required. That is why the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has a launch site in Florida, and the European Space Agency (ESA) has a launch site in French Guiana, both near the equator. So, it is yet another reason why Canada should consider annexing Turks and Caicos Islands so that the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) can build a spaceport over there.
