2015-04-06|Food Recall Warning (Allergen) - Cumin-containing products recalled due to undeclared almond
To whom it may concern
I was surprised when I could not find curry powder at a local supermarket. Furthermore, I was shocked to learn that the reason of its absence was that the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has recalled cumin-containing products due to undeclared almond as of 2015-03-22. Since I eat curry meals every single day, the disruption of curry supply is devastating for my sanity and well-being!
Since the violation is not the presence of poisonous substance which may have led to illnesses but merely labelling of an undeclared ingredient, please consider the penalty to be not a recall of the products but to mandate affixing a sticker label and/or the display of a prominent warning on the store shelf: "This product may contain almond."
Such common-sense enforcement will be a win-win-win situation in which the CFIA prevails in protecting the food safety for all Canadians with adequate notice, the manufacturers/retailers can continue to sell the products with adequate warning, and the consumers can continue to purchase the products with adequate precautions.
More than 2 weeks after the recall date, I actually found "No Name curry powder" at a Loblaws store in Ottawa, ON, although the same product was already unavailable at a Loblaws store in Gatineau, QC. Therefore, the "recall" is unevenly enforced.
P.S. Reporting the problem in webpage "Contact Us" on the CFIA's website <http://www.inspection.gc.ca/> leads to "Page Not Found - Error 404". Moreover, clicking "Employee Directory" leads to "Can't open the page <http://geds20-sage20.ssc-spc.gc.ca/en/GEDS20/?rd=1>". HELP!!!
