No-Questions-Asked Automatic Parking Payment System

1. The next revolutionary IoT product / application

Human parking attendants have mostly been replaced by Pay and Display system. So have Park-O-Meters for street parking. However, it is still a confusing manual system.

A Pay and Display machine is a kiosk that replaces, on average, six to eight individual parking meters on a street. It allows users to pay for on-street parking using coins or credit cards (VISA, MasterCard and American Express accepted) and provides them with a receipt.

There is also a pilot programme of Pay for Parking by Phone.

PayByPhone parking allows customers to initiate and extend their parking sessions by making a phone call, using a mobile phone application, or logging in online. It is fast, easy, and convenient.

2. The main obstacle(s) that keeps us away from that.

However, such smartphone apps still require users to enter data for transactions, according to PayByPhone's website.

2. Enter your location code
3. Enter your parking duration
4. Extend your parking anytime
These steps require human intervention even though the data can be acquired automatically from enhanced GPS technology, personal profile, etc. So, it is still far from the ideal system of setting a personal default of automatic payment, i.e., as long as the amount does not exceed a pre-determined amount, or else notify the user.

3. Suggestions on how to remove those obstacles.

In the age of Self-Driving Cars, such No-Questions-Asked Automatic Parking Payment System should be quite possible with a software agent, which is a computer system that is capable of flexible autonomous action in dynamic, unpredictable, typically multi-agent domains.
The city can encourage a quick turnaround by progressively increasing fees over time after a certain period, i.e., $1.00/10 minutes for the first hour, then $2.00/10 minutes for the second hour, etc.
This kind of ultimate integration will lead to a win-win-win situation, i.e., further simplicity for the users, more revenue for the municipal government, better resource allocation for the law enforcement.
