Here are my comments on the consultation process of Canada Lands Company's Rue Booth Street re-development project. First of all, I find that all of the 3 options are well thought out. I note the emphasis on the design of preserving the chimney (smokestack), which is cylindrical in shape.
I propose that the 4 or 5 cylindrical towers to be also cylindrical in shape. A cylindrical building is more earthquake-resistant and hurricane-resistant than non-cylindrical buildings. Successful examples of cylindrical skyscrapers include the following.
- Marina City (Corn Cobs): mixed-use residential/commercial building complex in Chicago, IL, U.S.A.
- Australia Square Tower: office and retail complex in Sydney, Australia
- Doha Tower: office building in Doha, Qatar
The architectural style with such a distinguishing feature has potential to become one of the most significant iconic landmarks in Ottawa, ON, Canada.
