My car's brakes were completely replaced last year, the front brakes in March 2017, and the rear brakes in August 2017. I drive only about 5 000 km/year.
Today, I went to the same Canadian Tire for an oil change. They said that there is free inspection, so I took it. After inspection, they said that the front brakes were "finis" and had to be replaced. Also, the rear brakes had to be adjusted. The total estimate was almost $700 CAD!
I told them to look into the past service record in Canadian Tire's information system. When they did that, they certainly found last year's repairs. They were discussing the matter behind the back, and came back apologizing that the mechanic was "jeune". They still had audacity to recommend "nettoyage" to remove salt from the brakes for a total estimate of more than $300 CAD!!
I refused it, of course.
Car repair is a great business because they can prey on people's ignorance. There was a story in a CBC-TV Marketplace programme some time ago. This Canadian Tire does not allow the customers to inspect the car in the shop unless steel-towed boots are worn, unlike another Canadian Tire in town which does.
