Some "rules" are meant to be just "guidelines". Bending the supermarket checkout rule and going through an empty express lane with more than 8 items could lead to maximum satisfaction for all, i.e., the customer saves time, the cashier helps customers to relieve frustration rather than being idle, the operator makes more money by passing more customers.
Thank God, some sane cashiers at the express lane welcomed me from a regular lane with way over the limit in the past, but the self-checkout service suits me fine now.
