In 1992, Ross Perot said "you people" in a speech, and he lost a presidential election. In 2019, Don Cherry said "you people" on TV, and he was fired. How come "you people" is considered divisive for society, but it is still acceptable in Canada today as "defining features of Canadians" to use equally divisive phrases like "non-whites", "visible minority", "ethnic minority", "racial minority", "racialised people" and "people of colour"?
