Challenge: Comfortable protective summer clothing for electrical work activities
Describe your solution
Solution Title
Sweat Buster Moisture Chimney by a Silicon Steel Strap
Abstract
A plurality of slits are made to open with zippers. A piece of silicon steel is embedded into the fabric of the garment at each slit to keep the opening wide open so that warm moisture from the human body can escape vertically upwards through the slits effectively.
Description
Turtleneck T-shirts are so effective that there is no need to wear a scarf while cross-country skiing in winter. Conventional T-shirts with a zipper can be opened vertically, but moisture does not escape properly without air gap between a human body and a T-shirt. So, a T-shirt was cut horizontally below the neck, 2 holes were drilled into a Cycling Warning Reflective Safety Band Pant Band Leg Strap Belt Silicon Steel on each side, and the strap belt was stitched to the T-shirt. The conceptual prototype with a one-touch chimney opening feature is crude, but I can feel warm moisture rising upwards and escaping from the opening as intended.
This concept can be applied to protective clothing for operators performing live working activities on low-voltage (LV) electrical systems. A horizontal slit is made above each breast pocket and in the back neck area, and a zipper is attached to the opening. A piece of silicon steel is embedded into the fabric of the garment.
In the summer months when temperatures and humidity are high, the operator can open the horizontal zippers and activate the silicon steel to keep the slit wide open so that warm moisture from the human body can escape vertically upwards through the slits effectively for improved thermo-physiological comfort levels.
Criticalities
Exact positioning of the zippers and the strength of silicon steel are still undetermined. Further R&D is required.
Advantages
The design uses natural convection, i.e., hot air goes up.
Resources needed
I can construct a prototype, but I would need the Seeker to help with scale up and distribution.
