Here is an example of poor design for trash bins at the Pyramide de Sainte-Foy, QC, Canada. Approaching from the front, a trash sign is visible only from the front of one of the trash bins. As a result, I thought that both bins were for trash, so I put non-recyclable trash into the recycling bin which is marked on the side only.
