At Provigo Gatineau Plateau, I returned some beverage containers, and received a receipt of deposit for $1.20 CAD. After some purchases of $4.00 CAD, I scanned the receipt of the deposit at the self-checkout, which listed it as "ITEM DE EPICERIE". The total amount was $5.20 CAD instead of expected $4.00 - $1.20 = $2.80 CAD.
Fortunately, my cognitive ability was not too hampered by consumption of ethanol (C2H5OH) in the holiday season. Therefore, I was able to point out the error at the customer service counter which made appropriate correction of $1.20 CAD and issued correct refund of $1.20 CAD.
The clerk explained to me that any barcode adds to the total purchase amount, so there is no way to make it subtract. Please take proactive action and have your ICT (Information and Communications Technology) department fix up the self-checkout software of point of sale (POS) systems at all stores owned by Loblaw Companies Ltd. so that such appearance of fraudulent transaction in highway robbery style would not happen again!
Software fix would be as simple as adding this pseudo-code.
