My original central heat pump was installed in 1988. After 32 years of service, I had the Coleman THE system replaced by a Daikin system in 2020. When the heat pump was being installed, I stayed home to observe the installation process.
The refrigerant of the original Coleman THE system was Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). The refrigerant of the Daikin system is Difluoromethane (CH2F2) (R-32/HFC-32).
To my great surprise and disappointment, contractor's technician simply released the valve to let the refrigerant gas escape into the atmosphere in entirety instead of using any kind of capture system.
So, the mysterious sources of CFCs are old air conditioners, heat pumps and refrigerators with CFCs being decommissioned without any recovery of refrigerant gases.
