My professional artist daughter Véronique needed a plurality of beaten-up optical discs (CD, CD-ROM, DVD, etc.) for a dystopian film that she was producing. So, I cooked some old optical discs in a microwave oven.
Curiously, CD, CD-ROM and DVD with aluminum (Al) reflective layer were well-destroyed to produce desired effect. However, R discs (CD-R, DVD-R, DVD+R) with gold (Au), silver (Ag) or a silver alloy reflective layer were not damaged at all by microwave energy.
Here is one CD or CD-ROM with aluminum (Al) reflective layer, suffering from extensive damage on only one half of the surface while the other half is almost intact.
Meanwhile, professional architect Kevin captured one of randomised Google stock image backgrounds.
