2025-05-23|IBAN for Canadian Banks

To whom it may concern

My geological engineer/exploration geologist daughter Évelyne worked at LKAB in Sweden. When she came back to Canada, she had her bank account closed. Meanwhile, the Swedish tax agency Skatteverket wanted to send her tax refund. So, Évelyne sent Skatteverket all the necessary information requested for transfer, i.e., Scotiabank's SWIFT/BIC code, institution number, branch transit number, and account number.

However, here is Skatteverket's reply.

Under övriga upplysningar i årets inkomstdeklaration begär du att få utbetalning till ditt konto i Kanada.
En anmälan om att registrera ett utländskt bankkonto måste vara underskriven av behörig person och ska innehålla följande uppgifter:

Personens namn och svenska person- eller samordningsnummer samt kontaktuppgifter.
IBAN och BIC för personens bankkonto.
Namnförtydligande av underskriften.
Under other information in the annual income tax return, you request payment to your account in Canada.
A notification to register a foreign bank account must be signed by an authorized person and must contain the following information:

The person's name and Swedish personal or coordination number as well as contact information.
IBAN and BIC for the person's bank account.
Name clarification of the signature.

Although Scotiabank provided SWIFT and BIC numbers, they do not have IBAN. Therefore, Évelyne has no way of collecting the Swedish tax return that she deserves!

Here is the situation in Canada's 6 largest banks ("Big Six").

Bank of Montreal (BMO)

Bank of Montreal (BMO) accounts in Canada do not have an IBAN (International Bank Account Number).

Bank of Nova Scotia (Scotiabank)

Scotiabank does not have an IBAN number, other identifiers such as SWIFT/Bank + Transit and your account number are used instead.

Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC)

CIBC (Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce) uses a system similar to IBAN in many other countries, but it doesn't directly use the IBAN format.

National Bank of Canada

An IBAN only identifies European banks. It cannot be used to identify National Bank.

Royal Bank of Canada (RBC)

Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) doesn't use IBANs (International Bank Account Numbers) in Canada.

Toronto-Dominion Bank (TD)

TD Bank in Canada does not use IBANs.

Please make it mandatory for all Canadian banks to provide IBAN.

To whom it may concern

On OBSI's webpage "Make a Complaint", I entered all the information. Clicking button "SUBMIT COMPLAINT" resulted in the following error message.

There was a problem with your submission. It has been added to the submission queue and will be reviewed manually
It turned out that OBSI's website considers filename "2025-05-23|IBAN for Canadian Banks.pdf" to be illegal because of character "|" (vertical bar). HELP!!!
