My geological engineer/exploration geologist daughter Évelyne captured this image of pancake ice from mixing of water coming fast from the dam in Baie-Comeau, QC, Canada.
Pancake ice is a rare natural phenomenon in which circular disks form when slushy frazil ice on water surfaces is shaped by turbulent wave action and collisions, developing raised edges as they bump into one another. They typically form in rivers or oceans when temperatures drop significantly below freezing point.
