A successful man is he who receives a great deal from his fellow men, usually incomparably more than corresponds to his service to them.
All human beings, whatever their position in society, are suffering from this deterioration. Unknowingly prisoners of their own egotism, they feel insecure, lonely, and deprived of the naive, simple, and unsophisticated enjoyment of life... The economic anarchy of capitalist society as it exists today is, in my opinion, the real source of the evil.

Never limit yourself because of others' limited imagination; never limit others because of your own limited imagination.
Jobs, Steve P.
A lot of [what it means to be smart] is the ability to zoom out, like you're in a city and you could look at the whole thing from the 80th floor down at the city. And while other people are trying to figure out how to get from point A to point B reading these stupid little maps, you could just see it in front of you. You can see the whole thing.
Be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren't used to an environment where excellence is expected.
Deciding what not to do is as important as deciding what to do. That's true for companies and it's true for products.
Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice.
Getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.

Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.
Let's go invent tomorrow rather than worrying about what happened yesterday.
My model for business is the Beatles. They were four guys who kept each other's kind of negative tendencies in check. They balanced each other, and the total was greater than the sum of the parts. That's how I see business: Great things in business are never done by one person. They're done by a team of people.
People don't know what they want until you show it to them.
People think focus means saying yes to the thing you've got to focus on. It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas that there are. You have to pick carefully.
Quality is more important than quantity. One home run is much better than two doubles.
Simple can be harder than complex. You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it's worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains.
Sometimes life's going to hit you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did.
Sometimes when you innovate, you make mistakes. It is best to admit them quickly, and get on with improving your other innovations.
Stay hungry. Stay foolish.
That's been one of my mantras - focus and simplicity. Simple can be harder than complex; you have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple.
We don't get a chance to do that many things, and every one should be really excellent. Because this is our life. Life is brief, and then you die, you know? And we've all chosen to do this with our lives. So it better be damn good. It better be worth it.
When you're a carpenter making a beautiful chest of drawers, you're not going to use a piece of plywood on the back, even though it faces the wall and nobody will ever see it. You'll know it's there, so you're going to use a beautiful piece of wood on the back. For you to sleep well at night, the aesthetic, the quality, has to be carried all the way through.
You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something - your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.
You can't just ask customers what they want and then try to give that to them. By the time you get it built, they'll want something new.
You have to not have the same bag of experiences as everyone else does, or else you're gonna make the same connections and you won't be innovative. [É] You might want to think about going to Paris and being a poet for a few years. Or you might want to go to a third-world country - I'd highly advise that. Falling in love with two people at once. Walt Disney took LSD, do you know that?
Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.
Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it.

I don't know how invention works. In most cases, it's sort of the process of looking at the same thing everybody else looks at and finally seeing something else.
If most people think what you're doing is completely normal, it probably is. Why do it? Everybody else is doing that. Do something else.
If you're not going to change the world, you know, go to sleep, go hibernate.
Life is not about what's done, what's finished. It's not the destination. It's the route. Life is about the journey. It's about where you're going. It's not where you are.

A dogma is born when the solutions are presented without enough original context, and newcomers feel pressured to delegate crucial decisions to an authority.
As the time passes and the context is forgotten, dogma stays. Acolytes form a bubble to protect themselves from fear of what they didn't learn in the past, evaluation of the choices they make in the present and irrelevance of their dogma in the future. What a way to waste everyone's time!

Arguments from authority carry little weight. In science there are no "authorities", only expert opinion. Do not be intimidated by the experts. Ask questions.
Ockham's Razor: When there are several explanations for the same problem, the simpler explanation is usually the correct one.
Paradox: one must be open to weirdest idea, but must ruthlessly weed out those who don't work (culture, science, technology?).

You see things; and you say, "Why?"
The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

Be a goal-oriented, goal-control person.
Believe and you can achieve.
Desire determines destiny.
Determination (sheer desire to succeed) is far more important than intelligence and talent.

Set goals, and the goals will control your destiny.
Steal an idea from one person, and you're plagiarizing; steal ideas from 100 people, and you have a doctoral thesis.
The only way to treat everyone the same is by treating each individual differently.
There is no greatness without the passion to be great.
Think big or don't get out of bed.

choose the simplest solution possible with the loosest guarantees that are practical. The reason you want all these things is you need flexibility to solve problems. The minute you over specify something you paint yourself into a corner. You aren't going to make those guarantees. Your problem becomes automatically more complex when you try and make all those guarantees. You leave yourself no way out.
Tauro, Walter
If you don't take a chance, nothing ever happens.
TED-Ed: The philosophy of cynicism
All have one thing in common: they questioned the status quo. And that's an example we can still follow: not to blindly follow conventional or majority views, but to think hard about what is truly valuable. Thinking critically about our institutions and way of life is more important than ever.

If you look back on a life where you followed your dreams, you'll most likely have no regrets. Remember it's not the things you do in life that you regret. It's the things that you didn't do.

I struggled for the first year and a half as an undergraduate at Caltech where I spent most of my subsequent career, but I developed my own ways of learning things. Keeping records of what I was learning, working things out in my own way, and notebooks and so forth, that enabled me to achieve despite having a slow working mind.
So I advise students, you find your own way, and you have to experiment mastering material and your own directions that you can be successful in and everybody is different. We can all succeed in different ways.
Thunberg, Greta
Depression is something that often people who are different suffer from, either because they work too much or because they are being bullied because they are different or just because they don't feel right in this society - that they feel everything is meaningless. That is often the people who think a bit outside the box and who can see things from a different, new perspective.
I have Asperger's syndrome and that means I'm sometimes a bit different from the norm. And - given the right circumstances - being different is a superpower. It makes you think differently. And especially in such a big crisis like this one we need to think outside the box. We need to think outside our current system, that we need people that think outside the box and who aren't like everyone else.
We need these people, especially now, when we need to change things and we can't see it just from where we are. We need to see it from a bigger perspective and from outside our current systems. That's why people who are different are so necessary: because they contribute so much. Therefore we need to really look after the people who are different and who may not be heard. We need to listen to those and to look after each other.

You live by your own rules. When the world zig, you zag. You march to the beat of your own drum.
Trotter, Wilfred
The mind likes a strange idea as little as the body likes a strange protein, and resists it with a similar energy. It would not perhaps be too fanciful to say that a new idea is the most quickly acting antigen known to science. It we watch ourselves honestly, we shall often find that we have begun to argue against a new idea even before it has been completely stated. I have no doubt that that last sentence has already met with repudiation - and shown how quickly the defence mechanism gets to work.
