Dedication...
- In my first job I taught six periods, supervised the lunch period, baby sat in the study hall, chaperoned the dances on Friday night, coached all three teams in football, baseball, basketball, and cleaned up the gym. I remember the principal calling me in and telling me if I did a good job next year, he would put me on full-time.
- Jack Donohue, Former National Men's Basketball Coach
Empowerment...
- The danger in coaching a team is that you get them into a marionette stage where they all dance like a kick line. Although the game plan calls for a concerted joint effort, they are individuals and the preparation for something as stressful as a major tournament has to take their individuality into account.
- Marina Van de Merwe, National Women's Field Hockey Coach
Reflection...
- Think about what you are doing and don't accept it. Once you become comfortable with the basic idea of volleyball, don't be afraid to change it totally and do something that fits your team.
- Mike Burchuk, National Women's Volleyball Coach
Teaching...
- It's nice to have the information, but it isn't the secret. It's how you teach and explain it, what drills and teaching cues you use with the athletes. I could even give the teaching cues away. It's how you sell them, how you're empathetic and how you look the guy in the eye.
- Dave King, Former Olympic and Professional Ice Hockey Coach
Personal Development...
- There will be ups and downs, pitfalls along the way, but in the end, if they've survived a rigorous, demanding, and intense athletic involvement, and also done well academically by achieving their degree, what more rewarding experiences could you ask for?
- Ken Shields, Former National Men's Basketball Coach
